Stairway to Heaven: Every Section of the 8:02 Explained

▶ Jump to the video

Stairway to Heaven runs 8:02, and it never appeared on a US single or on the Billboard Hot 100.

Jimmy Page began the music at a cottage in Wales in 1970, and Robert Plant improvised the first lyrics at Headley Grange.

The band played it in public for the first time in Belfast, eight months before Led Zeppelin IV reached shops.

US FM radio then played it millions of times without a single to promote.

This page times each section, names the studios and the instruments, and follows the song through radio, charts and a six-year court case.

The band's wider catalog is on Led Zeppelin songs.

Stairway to Heaven Began in a Welsh Cottage and Took Four Studios

Jimmy Page wrote the music and Robert Plant wrote the lyrics.

The music began in 1970 at Bron-Yr-Aur, a cottage in Wales, after Led Zeppelin's fifth American tour.

Page said the first part came to him there one night, and the idea grew from taped fragments.

Plant's first lyrics came at Headley Grange, partly improvised, and he finished them there during the Led Zeppelin IV sessions in 1971.

The Instruments Behind the Build

The opening is a layered acoustic arrangement rather than one guitar.

  • Page played a Harmony Sovereign H1260 acoustic and a Fender Electric XII 12-string for the rhythm parts.
  • John Paul Jones overdubbed four recorder tracks, probably soprano, alto, tenor and bass.
  • Jones also played a Hohner Electra-Piano in the middle section.
  • Page's solo came from a 1959 Fender Telecaster that Jeff Beck had given him, through a Supro amp.
  • On stage Page switched to a Gibson EDS-1275 double-neck guitar, and Jones used a Mellotron for the recorder sound.

Stairway to Heaven Without a Single: Radio, Sheet Music and Charts

Atlantic wanted a single, and manager Peter Grant refused in 1972 and 1973.

In 1975 Page told Rolling Stone, "We were careful to never release it as a single."

Wikipedia calls it the most requested song on US FM radio of its time.

Counting the Plays and the Sheet Music

  • US radio sources reported about 2,874,000 plays around the song's 20th anniversary.
  • By 2000 the report was over three million broadcasts.
  • It is the biggest-selling single piece of rock sheet music, averaging about 15,000 copies a year and passing one million in total.
  • Plant gave $10,000 to Portland station KBOO during a pledge drive after a DJ there promised never to play it.

Stairway to Heaven does not appear in this site's Billboard Year-End or weekly Hot 100 data, because it never had a US single to chart.
